It's pretty safe to say that Etna is having a moment in the wine world. The wines are made from indigenous grapes grown in extreme conditions: high elements in volcanic soils on the side of a constantly erupting volcano. There is no other wine region in the world like it. Barone di Villagrande boasts one of the longest winemaking histories in Sicily, going back to the 19th century. The Etna Bianco is made from 90% Carricante and 10% other indigenous grapes, and shows an almost salty minerality at the end of a citrusy palate. This is a great wine for someone who loves the freshness of Pinot Grigio but is starting to look for something more interesting.
