"Selbach-Oster is a family winery in every sense. Led by Johannes Selbach with his wife Barbara and now adult children Hannah and Sebastian, this estate in the Middle Mosel continues to be one of the benchmarks for the entire region. Riesling is the principle variety here, with small amounts of Pinot Blanc and aromatic varieties cultivated in addition. The quality of the wines at this addresshave their basis in the great vineyard sites that Selbach farms. Productions is as traditional as it gets with gentle whole cluster pressing, no fining and natural fermentation, almost entirely in very old 1000 liter German fuder barrel.
The Pinot Blanc from Selbach is sourced from several different vineyards, but the largest part of the blend comes from old vine fruit grown on the western (cooler) side of the Zeltinger Himmelreich vineyard, which is entirely slate. The Pinot Blanc always includes a small dose of Riesling to give lift to this oft heavy variety. It’s a versatile and delicious and while it is distinctly Pinot Blanc the slate flavor is overt!" -- Skurnik Wines, Importer
