2014 Penfolds "Grange" Shiraz, South Australia
The legend. Grange was created through the vision and perseverance of winemaker Max von Schubert in 1951 against the wishes of the ownership of Penfolds. At the time the world and particularly Australia overwhelmingly demanded sweet wines and very few cared for dry wines. So Max made Grange in secret, hiding it from his bosses until he believed it was ready to be unveiled. The rest is history and Penfolds Grange is now one of the most sought-after and collectible wines in the world. Unusual for a wine of its statute, this is not a single vineyard wine, but a multi-region blend that varies from year to year. Having the access that Penfolds has to so many incredible vineyards, chief winemaker is Peter Gago and senior winemaker Stephanie Dutton comb through the most incredible fruit in Australia to year in and year out make only the very best wine that Australia can produce.
"At first glance, this is a purely indulgent wine, with gobs of creamy, milk chocolate-laden maraschino cherry, raspberry framboise and Earl Grey tea aromas. Then wave after wave of elements start filling in, with toasted cumin, peppermint oil, Kalamata olive and white pepper notes, combining into an almost overwhelming amount of details. Becomes indulgent again on the long, lush finish. 98 pts." -- Wine Spectator
