2017 Paradigm Cabernet Sauvignon, Oakville, Napa Valley
Paradigm has always struck me as a great value for Napa - Heidi Peterson Barrett has been the winemaker since day 1 (she started at Paradigm before helping launch Screaming Eagle); and compared to their neighbors (Harlan, Heitz Martha's, Opus One) it's an absolute bargain at $95. As always, the wine is 100% estate fruit, and they should have their organic certification after this harvest.
The winery itself was founded in 1991 by Marilyn and Ren Harris, two winegrowers with deep roots in Napa Valley. Marilyn's grandparents immigrated from Italy to Napa in the 1890's, while Ren's family came to California in 1769. Marilyn and Ren moved in to Napa Valley in the 1960's and settled into their home just east of where Paradigm sits today.
"This wine is deeply pigmented with ruby/garnet color. First sniff is Oakville Cabernet all the way. Nice layers of ripe berry and cherry-like fruit with a matching complement of toasty French Oak from an assortment of Coopers and different barrel ages. Gorgeous across the palate with a silky yet dense mouthcoating impression. Ripeness is key and the result is a wine with perfect balance and flow - just plain delicious. It's a big, beautiful wine now but has tremendous aging potential" -- Heidi Peterson Barrett, winemaker.
